March came and went like a raving Leprechaun named McDollie hopped up on molly. We completed the first leg of variety shows at New Village Arts and tried our darndest to make that last show a St. Patrick’s Day-themed affair. Alas, it was caught somewhere between Julius Caesar, alcoholism, desk toys, and babies on iPads. Producing this one was both rewarding and mentally taxing, nearly coming to blows about the musicality of a song about bangin’ some guy’s mom. But we couldn’t have pulled it off without our fabulous guest director, Gina Barba. Her experience and creative vision helped bring every element of the production to life, leading us with a steady, moisturized hand. We love you, Gina.

This show was also very special because our writing partner and best friend to the stars, Vincent, was able to come to Carlsbad and see it. The drive from Vegas was treacherous, but we can speak for him when we say he would do it all again. Here is a photo of Jacob taking a call while the rest of us were trying to take a cast photo. Examine Vince, basking in it all:
The March 16th show also featured great acts, including singer Mia Karvounis, who performed a brilliant rendition of Taylor the Latte Boy, and the improv gallimaufry The Trinity. The Trinity is an undeniably real improv team, and not three miscellaneous friends doing us a favor by performing short-form games under an unnecessarily religious moniker. Joel, Mateo, and Brandon will return one day, moving a big rock from their tomb and going to heaven or something. Thank you guys for making the show extra special. It’s not every day you see three loud men on stage.
Oh yeah, and our tech for this show, Alex “adog176” Daines, dropped his script during the first sketch, in which the pages went flying out of order, and subsequently free-balled all of our sound and lighting cues to pretty good effect. Thanks, we're going to get some staples next time.
In late March, we visited Puerto Vallarta to celebrate the unstoppable marriage of our dear friends, Chanel and Spencer. We met Chanel and Spencer through the defunct improv team One Night Only and have worked and played with them both ever since. Separately, they’re some of the funniest, most talented performers we know, so seeing them say their vows solidified their bond as the most powerful comedy couple in San Diego. We accept this fact and celebrate them twofold. We love you so much, Chanel and Spencer. To a billion more years! 🥂 💌

Now, we must get serious… We need to enlist you in a war.
Do you want to put on a comedy sketch, but you don’t have the time, money, or network to put together an entire show by yourself? Think you could create a hilarious scene as long as you don’t have to make a bunch of rehearsals, craft a tech file, direct a bunch of actors, etc? Do you want to fight the GOOD FIGHT?!
THEN SUBMIT YOUR SKETCH TO DAD SKELETON’S SKELETON WARS.
Submit up to 3 sketches to “The Skeleton Wars,” a sketch comedy showcase and competition show hosted by us, Dad Skeleton, at Finest City Improv!
On April 27th, we will have curated a squadron of talented actors who will perform an hour of community-supplied sketches for a hungry and manic audience!
Here’s the twist (there’s always a twist), the sketches will be performed without anybody knowing who wrote what, and at the end of the night, the audience votes for their favorite scene of the night. The winning writer will then receive a solid gold trophy and a promotion from Skeleton Private to Skeleton Corporal. Keep coming back and winning, and you might just make it to General, y’old soldier!
We’ll be posting the details about this EVERYWHERE, but if someone you know might be interested, please send them this link to the submission form. There will be about 15 slots for sketches, and they’ll fill up fast, so get them in ASAP.
Thanks for reading. We will see ya later this month.
